Sign Language used in Scotland is British Sign Language (BSL). The alpahabet is similar to the Australian sign language (Auslan) where two hands are used.
Information is provided in the list of hostels showing what is provided for the deaf, if any. Some hostels may have teletext TVs, some staff members can use sign language. Please check with hostels in advance
Some places can only be seen by tours only. This can be frustrating if you do not know what the tour guide is saying. Some places provide scripts specially for the deaf. Please ask for scripts. See sights to see what places provide scripts
There are five free-to-air television stations in Scotland. They are BBC One, BBC Two, Scottish TV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. Unlike TV in Australia, there is a lot less advertising which actually makes TV more enjoyable with breaks every 15-30 minutes. BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation and is similar to ABC in Australia, as there are no commercial breaks. TV programmmes may have its credits squashed and voiced over, and may have advertisements on the programmes.
All TV stations show have teletext subtitles which can be found on page 888.
In contrast to Australia, the majority of programmes are subtitled throughout
the day, with every programme being subtitled in the evening (prime time).
Another contrast to Australia is that teletext is available on all TV channels.
