Sights in Queensland

Sunset

Stop for sunset here where there is nothing: just a little outback

Wirrilyerna, Parapituri

This is a farm where you may stay overnight. Watch the farm animals here!

Donohue/Kennedy Highways

These areas were previously glaciers. Also there are flat topped mountains/hills around

Near the 'Hilton Hotel'

There is nothing here but a windmill, few trees, grass, and mountains in the distance

Winton

This town is the home of the Waltzing Matilda Centre. A festival was played during my visit to this town. Arno's wall can be visited here: it is made up of tyres, motorbike parts, TVs, microwaves, etc. Go for a swim in the outdoor pool for only $1

Hughendon

This town is part of the dinosaur country, there is a large model of a dinosaur opposite Grand Hotel

Porcupine Gorge

Millstream Falls National Park

Take a walk down to view Millstream Waterfall. Go for a swim in the shallow lake

Hugh Ross lookout

Behind one mountain is city of Cairns

Cairns

This town is a gateway to the tropical north of Queensland. There are no beaches there but you can catch a bus to some beaches further up north - Ellis and Palm Cove beaches. Check out the Skyrail where this optional ride on a cable car which takes you through the canopy of the rainforest all the way up to Kuranda. You will also go through the Halfway where you will stop at an information centre. If you choose not do go on the ride, go to other end of Skyrail terminal and visit the railway station there: there are many unusual and nice plants

Millaa Millaa Falls

Relax here and perhaps go for a dip here. Catfish swim here

Johnstone River Crocodile Farm

For $9, you can see large crocodiles and baby crocodiles. Among them are cassowaries, unusual birds. Feed the kangaroos with bread (or don't as bread is bad for them), walk near emus, wallabies, peacocks. Watch the staff feed the crocodiles and Gregory, their heaviest or largest crocodile. Unfortunately, they talk about crocodiles and I could not follow. Full price $13, children $6

Mission Beach

The name comes from an Aboriginal mission which blew over in a cyclone in 1918. The coastline stretches for 14km containing a few white sandy beaches lined by tropical rainforest. Walk along the beach and also Wongaling Beach. Hire a bike and cycle on the tracks to Clump Point to the lookout. See the colourfully decorated poles in Mission Beach township, called Ulysses Link. Visit Dunk Islands and do some snorkelling or walk around. Go whitewater rafting on Tully River. The Cassowary bird can be found here

Cardwell beach

Stop briefly in the village of Cardwell which is situated by the beach where there is a view of islands

Hitchinbrook

Pause for a while to take in the view of Hitchinbrook Island

Mango Factory

The drinks are produced here from mango as well as other fruits

Townsville

Townsville is the commercial, admistrative and manufacturing centre of North Queensland named after Robert Towns who financed its development. James Cook university is in this town, and if you love diving, the Yongala wreck is Australia's best dive here

Magnetic Island

This island is so named becuase Captain Cook thought his compass went wrong when he sailed pass in 1770. Just a ferry ride off Townsville, this island is like a tropical island (not literally). A small resident population of 2,500, it consists of 4 villages all of which are 3km apart: Picnic Bay, Arcadia, Nelly Bay and Horseshoe Bay. It does not take long to cycle from one town to another but it is very hilly and more difficult on the west side. An alternative is get a moke which is a popular form of transport if you have a driving licence

Airlie Beach

Though it is small, this bustling town has many good shops. There is a few of every kind of shop, making for better competition. The nearest cheap supermarket is 30 minutes walk away but if you are staying at ReefOs, you would be close to it and also have free trips to the town. The lagoon here is great for swimming or just walking around, and you could sunbathe on the grassy areas around the lagoon. There is a small stretch of beach there where you may do some activities such as the speedboat. Hostels are plentiful here, as are many tour places. This town is the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef

The Whitsunday Islands

Altogether, there is a total of 74 islands, of which 8 are resort islands. Most are uninhabited and are national parks. Explore the pure white sands of Whitehaven Beach, go snorkelling or diving, watch the sunrises or sunsets

The Great Barrier Reef

There are many towns you can depart from to get there. I went from Airlie Beach with Pro Dive to do a diving course. Little Black Reef is one place for diving. A lot of fish can be found here including damselfish. Crayfish and fuselier are among the creatures found here. Hook Island was where night dives took place. Snorkelling is great here - a turtle may be spotted here. There is plenty of fish appearing in schools and also corals: it is a best place for snorkelling as they are close to the surface.

Dingo

Dingo is situated far away from the east coast. Make a didgeridoo with Aborigines at Namoi Hills Cattle Farm or crack whips, throw boomerangs, be driven around the 35,000-acre farm like cattle, handle a shotgun and let the guide shoot through your clothes. End the day with dancing lessons

Rockhampton

This town is known as the beef capital of Australia where there are over 3 million cattle. There is a zoo to visit (no admission)

Hervey Bay

This is the stopping point for Fraser Island safari adventures, the town has shops scattered around as it consists of five settlements with a population of 40,000. There is a beach here which is protected by Fraser Island

Fraser Island

This island is the largest sand island in the world and is World Heritage listed. Go for an adventure on the island on 4WDs. The island was named after Eliza Fraser, who was the wife of a captain whose shiop was wrecked in 1936. This is the only place in the world where rainforest grows in the sand. Dingos inhabit the island but are not dangerous if you do not approach them or feed them - follow the rules posted around the island

Gympie

There is a model of a giant pineapple

Mary Cairncross Park

This park is situated in the Blackhall Ranges, there is a view of the Glasshouse Mountains, its name derived from Captain Cook while navigating Australia, the light reflected off the mountains

Surfers Paradise

This town of high-rise buildings would give you the impression that it is more of a city. This is the stopping point if you wish to visit the theme parks such as Wet n Wild or Movie World. There are two beaches here on both sides, one of them is popular for surfing
