Hostels in Tasmania

Launceston City Youth Hostel

This hostel was formerly a canteen for the staff of Coats and Patons across the road. On arriving, it may feel like a hospital or an institution but it’s comfortable. Though it has leaflets and books of YHA, this hostel is not a member of YHA. The staff is friendly and one made calls for me. The staff are very aware of deaf – one staff member told me about a film with burnt in subtitles; it was on TV at that time. You can view its numerous collection of leaflets and accommodation books from the last century: the owners probably did a lot of travelling. Warning: the leaflets are old so check for date and current prices

Bicheno Youth Hostel/Bicheno Beach House

This is a YHA hostel. The office is next to the hostel. The manager/owner is helpful and very nice as she drove me to Bicheno to catch the bus and made calls for me. She also remembered to make the call the next day and looked for me - I only got up when she told me of the call!

Iluka Family Centre

This hostel is a member of YHA. This hostel is very clean and is conveniently situated behind the small supermarket, café and bakery, filling station and pub. The staff helped me with her knowledge of area and made a phone call to check the information, and also to reserve a seat on the bus
