Hostels in South Australia

Mt Gambier Gaol, Mt Gambier

This was a former jailhouse which housed criminals until 1995 and the dorms are cells. Each dorm consists of a toilet and sink and two bunk beds. Live like a prisoner for a change - the prisoners did not have any luxury! The lounge is quite comfortable

Cannon St Backpackers, Adelaide

This large hostel is just across from the bus station with close proximity to shops and supermarket. Avail of its generous offers!

Old Mananga Schoolhouse, Barossa Valley

Have a wild time in this old school and dress up as a schoolgirl! Be naughty for a change by sampling its wine! You are welcomed to this hostel with free tea or coffee and biscuits. The hostel is close to 67 wineries so you can hire a bike or take a tour - ask at hostel

The Prairie Hotel, Parachilna

This hamlet has a population of five people so the number of backpackers is always more than the number of locals! Check out the tour where you live and camp with Iga Warta Aboriginal Community for a few nights. Try a different meal here - emu burgers and kangaroo steak and sausages are offered

Andu Lodge (YHA), Quorn

Walk around the village and check the shops, and perhaps have a talk to a local in the shops

Radeka's Downunder Motel, Coober Pedy

Due to the hot weather here, people live underground. This hostel is built underground with dorms underground, kitchen and toilets on ground floor. The reception, opal shop and the bar areas are underground. There is a tour around Coober Pedy and the opal fields where you may have a chance to look for opals in the heat
