Australian states

Australian Capital Territory

When Australia became federated in 1901 and became states, a decision was to be made on the capital. Due to Sydney and Melbourne wishing to be capitals, the decision could not be decided on one of them so the new capital was placed between the two, named Canberra, an Aboriginal term for 'meeting place'. The population of ACT is 309,000 over an area of 2366 sq km. Canberra (postcode 2601) has a population of 308,000.

New South Wales - The First State

This state was the first state of Australia. Its capital is Sydney with a poplulation of 4m (postcode 2000)

Sydney is a quite a busy city. The weather is quite hot during the summer but is humid. The weather may change suddenly - the sky may get dark early, giving the eerie feeling before the rain falls. The rains are quite awful, coming down in buckets. Sometimes the rain falls for a few minutes while on other days, it rains for days. The weather cools down but is still warm. The city is quite hilly. The suburbs are quite small and are close to beaches. The city is not as green as Melbourne.

Northern Territory - The Outback State

This state is very sparse and contains only 1% of the population. It's where the Red Centre can be visited: the Uluru and Watarrka

Queensland - The Tropical State

Queensland is the home of the Great Barrier Reef. This state has tropical weather and is warm all year around

South Australia

Tasmania

Tasmania is the only state that is not part of the mainland. It is a green country, as you would notice when going from one place to another. The weather seems to vary all over the state. During my travels there, it was freezing in Hobart but there was little rain - just for one day. In Launceston, it was slightly warmer but it rained almost every day. On the east coast of Tasmania, it was hot there that I wore shorts and t-shirt. The cities are very small, with Hobart containing about 130,000 people that public transport is not frequent with buses running across the state every few days. The Tasmanians wear t-shirts and shorts even during winter, so don't be shocked when you get there!

Victoria - The Garden State

Victoria is smaller from NSW and is more greener than this state. In winter, there are often snow in the mountains so it is not surprising winter sports are popular. Melbourne is the capital which is very different from Sydney in that it is more laidback, and the CBD consists mainly of office buildings.
